A trip to the Phoenix Art Museum

Over at the P.A.M there were so many options for me to chose. But the one that stood out the most to me was one that seems to get overlooked the most. Down the hall leading to the Arcadia Farms restaurant (next to the Museum store) I saw a piece by artist Louise Nevelson. At first it wasn't at all what I expected because typically what most people (myself included) know most from this artist are his large scaled pieces that appear as multiple shadow boxes filled with various items and then painted one solid color. In fact, P.A.M does have one example of such works.
But this sculpture Untitled was the opposite. It was small, and austere. There was nothing that would make a viewer get that instant "Wow" moment as most of Nevelsons other works would, yet something about it held my interest. Its title I felt was fitting because the subject matter itself was uncertain so how could a person give it a full title. It appears to be a representation of a human figure. But is he resting, or ready to get up and go some where? I think that is what I like most about this piece. It is mysterious and I (the viewer) am able to continue the story of this figure.

  1. The images are a bit small, so I can't see them as closely as I'd like. However, based on what I can make of it, it does seem like a mysterious piece. I really like the abstraction of it. It just wants to make the viewer come close to it and observe it from every angle. The fact that it looks different from every angle makes it all the more interesting to study. I also feel that there's a play of weight with the piece. Because it's small, I feel like it would be light. Yet, its mass makes it feel like it would be heavy, too. Maybe it's the material that makes it seem heavy.

  2. I agree, this piece is far different from his other large-scale boxes. Instead of his usual common objects, it seems that he was going for more of an abstract, expressive work. I find it interesting that the mass and weight of the sculpture highly contrasts his typical emptiness and play on light and dark. Hally mentioned that the material may be what makes it seem heavy, and I agree with that. Compared to his other works with thin lines of a lighter material, this is a stark contrast.

  3. This piece does seem very opposite to what this artist seems to normally create. Usually the subjects of his pieces are easily discernible but this one is ambiguous and hard to understand. I like that you found a piece that is very unique and off the beaten path of this artist.
