I went to the Harry Wood Gallery to see the Spinal Tap exhibition because I was interested in seeing more artwork made from already existing books, and I noticed that Hally had a piece in the exhibit too that I thought was really cool. Books are very special and meaningful to me and I really enjoyed seeing other artists re-invent books to showcase a certain story or feeling they have towards them.
It is most certainly interesting to see the unique approaches each artist uses to create art out of existing books. I found some to be very comical, witty, and intelligent. I find it hard to cut into books or "hurt" them in any way since I'm always trying to preserve my books. Maybe that is why I had a difficult time creating my own piece from a book, so instead I did something different.
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with you that it's great to see artists re-invent books in correlation to a story or emotion they have towards books. They're great sources of inspiration.
I wish I had looked at this show more thoroughly. I think because everything was SO different from one another, minus the book form quality, it was hard for me to take in all the work. I'm hoping I can still join ABBA though...it's a great opportunity for students to learn more about handcrafted books and printmaking.
