So I also went to the ABBA show in the Harry Wood Gallery. One of the reasons I really wanted to see this show is because I love books. I was very interested in seeing how the different artists approached this medium. I loved the variety of things I saw there. I think it is absolutely amazing the things artists can do with this medium. I loved all of the creative things that people came up with. One of my favorite pieces was the book with the exposed spine and the skeletal hand. I loved the fact that the artist created an actual spine to expose. I thought it was extremely clever.

Hi Kelsey-
ReplyDeleteYou should consider taking one of the bookmaking/printing classes here. Our department is one of the best in the country, and I think that your meticulous aesthetic combined with your love of books would be a natural with this kind of work.
Oh man, I wanted to see this show! I'm so sad that I didn't get around to it. =\ Books are a major part of my life and I've always thought the trend towards artistic books was fantastic. A book being purely a work of art is crazy- it completely throws off the boundaries of looking and touching, story and piece of art. It's fascinating It looks like the artists in the show had a great time playing with those boundaries.
ReplyDeleteThere were definitely a lot of variety in this show. I was surprised by the numerous different styles and approaches the artists used to make book art. I've never even considered using books to make art, so this exhibit really opened my eyes and mind. Each piece I studied gave me inspiration and new insight on things I could do myself, since I am also a book lover and am always up for making art out of things that aren't normally considered mediums of art.
