First Friday: Downtown Phoenix
I decided to take a little trip to Downtown Phoenix tonight before I go to Octoberfest at the park in Tempe Town Lake. Today is the first Friday in October! Why is that special? Because every first Friday of every month downtown Phoenix closes down some blocks and local artists, musicians and craftsmen get the opportunity to gather and show off all their magnificent talents! This is an incredible chance for local art to get noticed. Here is an image of a few that I personally enjoyed. The top right one I thought was amazing because of the scale of the painting. It's a street painting done on the side of a building and I really loved all the reality and abstraction that existed within this piece! The bottom right picture showcases a local artist whom I didn't get a chance to meet because he was extremely busy creating this magnificent piece of art. But I included this because I thought it was a great example of pointillism and how Seurat's technique is still being applied today. This piece was magical with the way the moon lights up the night sky and the stars glimmer over the meadow of trees. Saved the best for last! The piece on the left was my favorite of the night. Mainly because I like the simplicity of the piece but also because it made me feel very peaceful in a way. Also, this piece was done on old wooden slabs! Ah, I totally loved the fact that the artist took used wooden slabs and recycled them into this amazing creation! He also painted the negative space which I thought was absolutely brilliant and definitely adds to the success of this piece! That is all for today! Thank you for taking a look! Hope you enjoyed :)

These pieces look awesome! I especially like the one that looks like a bunch of dots... I love pieces like this that come together with implied lines, it really has a sense of movement. I also love the giant face! It's amazing how someone can paint something so huge and still keep all of those beautiful details.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that that occurred every first friday and it looks like a lot of fun. I'll have to check it out sometime. It's also pretty cool that you got to see someone while they were painting. :)
ReplyDeleteI've never heard of this before, but it sounds really neat! I'll definitely have to check it out sometime. The pieces you put up are all really nice, too. The top left is my favorite, I pretty much can't stop staring at it... but I love the other two as well. I actually had to stare at the one on the right for a long time before I finally figured out what it was, but I like the sort of abstract-ness of it.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of first friday before, as well as third and fourth friday...is this related to the same event or something different entirely? I think I want to visit the next time they have it set up! I really love the top left picture, its awesome.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love first fridays!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great way for local artists to get there work out there, visible for everyone to see. Not to forget that the people that do get to check it out, whether they are artists/art lovers/ or just a curious viewer can see something that they will love and overall embrace the local artworld is emerging with.
I too love the random paintings at the sides of buildings, my recent is one on the side of a little cafe called Carly's (Right behind Art Awakenings). You can see the time, effort and passion an artist puts in a piece this size. Just as the one youve taken a picture of here, very beautiful.
